The Lofts at Ironworks is the adaptive reuse and renovation of the historic Lawrence & Chapin Iron Works complex in downtown Kalamazoo. Originally constructed in the 1870s, the 150-year-old timber and masonry complex consisted of three existing buildings (East, Center, and West), each requiring full renovation while preserving the historic character that defines the property.
Three new livable stories were added on the existing concrete structure, bringing the development to a total of 83 loft-style apartment units and a ground-floor commercial restaurant space. Original timber framing and exposed masonry were integrated with modern finishes, mechanical systems, and contemporary unit layouts, delivering a residential product that honors the building's industrial heritage while meeting the demands of today's urban renter.
Located in the heart of downtown Kalamazoo, Ironworks represents a continuing partnership and a shared commitment to responsible urban revitalization, transforming an underutilized historic landmark into a long-term community asset.
